When I decided to start on my journey as a freelancer, I had no idea I could be doing half of the services I offer today on Fiverr. I knew I wanted to write for profit, but I had almost no idea how to do it. Some of the bigger questions for me were:

  • Why would anyone pay for writing as a service? Especially since it’s just a hobby for a lot of people.
  • If I convince anyone to pay me for this service, would it be a sustainable career path?
  • Could I possibly combine these with a full-time job?

Description

When I decided to start on my journey as a freelancer, I had no idea I could be doing half of the services I offer today on Fiverr. I knew I wanted to write for profit, but I had almost no idea how to do it. Some of the bigger questions for me were:

  • Why would anyone pay for writing as a service? Especially since it’s just a hobby for a lot of people.
  • If I convince anyone to pay me for this service, would it be a sustainable career path?
  • Could I possibly combine these with a full-time job?
  • What if I decide to travel out of the country, how will I continue to serve my clients? (Which I eventually did).
  • Can I earn enough to retire eventually?

All these questions made me stall for a while on my plans. I felt like I needed to be sure I didn’t want to create a CV and pursue employment more aggressively. Like you, I feared the consequences of going headlong into uncharted territories. I didn’t want to wake up thirty years down the line and realize that most of my peers were doing way better in life and I have nothing to show for my passion.

Is passion even enough place to start from? You may have thought about this a lot and questioned your ability to take something as little as that creative skill you have and turn it into a profitable business solution.

This book is a product of love and support. Through this period, I have had to rely on several people for one thing or the other. Adeola Olayemi, my content development associate, remains a critical part of this work as she contributed in no small measure to some of the projects and even help with thoughts on some of them. I am thankful for the encouragement of my partner, my sisters – Eunice and Deborah, my parents, Jane Oma – my mentor, and my team at itanile.org.
